JSU opens season with a pitching gem

JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State baseball team opened the 2013 season with a 4-0 win over Texas Southern on the first of the JSU Tournament at Braddy Field.

The Tigers jumped out to an early lead against TSU when Desmond Russell scored the first run of the game, off an error from TSU shortstop. A double from Malcolm Tate sent Bryce Taylor home, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Junior pitcher Brandon Gregory came out like lightening for JSU in the second inning, striking out the side.  In the bottom of the second, Nick Marigny was hit by a pitch to get on base. Later in the inning, Russell slammed a single bringing Marigny home making the score 3-0.

Gregory breezed through the rest of the game.  JSU tacked on a run in the bottom of the eighth giving the Tigers a decisive 4-0 lead. Gregory came back in the ninth to close the game out pitching an opening day complete game while only giving up four hits. In nine innings of action, Gregory recorded six strikeouts.  Tate and Russell each recorded three hits to lead the Tigers. Russell had two RBI and Tate had one.

In earlier action today, Texas Southern defeated Eastern Illinois 4-3.

The Tigers return to tournament action Saturday, 2/16/13 against Texas Southern at 3:00 pm followed by Eastern Illinois at 6:00 pm.
