MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Jackson State (26-20, 8-12) baseball team returned to action Saturday, facing the Alabama State Hornets in the first two games of a SWAC three-game series. The Tigers won the first game by a run and fell by nine in the second.

 

Game 1 Recap: (Box Score)

JSU outlasted Alabama State in the opening game of a Saturday twin bill. JSU won 5-4. Desmond Russell (6-4) pitched the complete game to pick up the win. He allowed 13 hits and struck out three batters. The Tigers scored their five runs on 13 hits. Gary Thomas led JSU’s offensive effort, going 4-4 at the plate with two runs. Russell, Tilur Smith, Melvin Rodriguez and Stephen Curtis each recorded two hits.

Curtis scored the first run of the game in the second inning when Thomas singled to left center field. Thomas scored in the fifth when Tilur Smith singled to left field. A Russell single scored Thomas and Curtis in the sixth and the Tigers scored their final run of the game in the ninth when a Melvin Rodriguez scored Russell.

 

Game 2 Recap: (Box Score)

The Tigers fell 11-2 in the nightcap. Jamal Wilson (2-3) suffered the loss. In three innings of work he allowed two runs on one hit and had two strikeouts. The Tigers offense scored their two runs on seven hits. Desmond Russell and Gary Thomas each finished with two hits.

Bryce Taylor scored the first run of the game for JSU in the sixth when Fred Hampton doubled down the left field line. Hampton then scored when Thomas doubled down the left field line.

 

Next Up For JSU:  The two teams return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. for the final game of the series. The Tigers look to win their first SWAC series since sweeping Mississippi Valley State at Braddy Field (Mar. 15-16).
