MOREHEAD, Miss. – Desmond Russell pitched a complete game and went 2-4 at the plate to help lead the Jackson State baseball team to a 15-3 victory over Mississippi Valley State in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Friday evening at Bellipani Complex.
With the win JSU improves to a 24-16, 7-9 record. Russell (5-4) pitched seven effective innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He also struck out six batters. JSU recorded 16 hits, its second highest total of the season. Everyone in the JSU lineup recorded at least one hit and scored at least one run. Melvin Rodriguez and Gary Thomas each finished with three hits. Nick Marigny and Jose Cruz had two hits each. Tilur Smith hit his third home run of the season in the second inning.
JSU opened and closed the game in strong fashion, scoring six runs in the first inning and seven in the seventh.
The two teams will square off on Saturday to play the final two games of the series.
