JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team snapped a four game losing streak by sweeping the Rust College Bearcats in a mid-week, non-conference double header at Braddy Field Wednesday evening. The Tigers won the first game 25-1 and the second game 9-0.
With the wins JSU improves to a 19-10 record.
JSU scored its 25 runs on 19 hits en route to the victory. 10 Tigers recorded at least one hit and 11 scored at least one run. Bryce Taylor, Melvin Rodriguez, Desmond Russell and Wyatt Sutton each registered three hits to lead the JSU offense. Vincent Anthonia (2-0) pitched the complete game to get the victory. In seven innings of work, he allowed one run on five hits, while striking out 10 of the 26 batters he faced.
The Tigers jumped out to the early lead, scoring nine runs in the first inning. JSU also added eight runs in the third inning and another seven in the fourth.
JSU won the nightcap 9-0. The Tigers recorded 10 hits with Fred Hampton leading the offensive effort with three hits and two runs. Aneko Knowles pitched six innings to get the win. He gave up only three hits and struck out 12 batters.
JSU put the first runs of the game on the scoreboard. The Tigers scored four runs in the fifth inning and another five in the sixth.
JSU returns to action Saturday when the Tigers travel to Lorman, Miss. for a three game series.
