JACKSON, Miss. — The Jackson State baseball team swept the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks with a 5-2 victory Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at Braddy Field during a mid-week home and home series.

JSU put the first run on the scoreboard in the first inning when Charles Tillery scored on a Melvin Rodriguez single to right center field. ULM tied the game with a run at the top of the third inning. At the bottom of the third, the Tigers added another run in the third when Desmond Russell scored on a Rodriguez double to centerfield, giving JSU a 2-1 lead.

Each team scored a run in the fourth inning. Tilur Smith scored for JSU on an error by the catcher to make the score 3-2. The Tigers scored a run in the seventh and eighth innings. Tillery scored on a passed ball in the seventh and Darius Hampton scored on a sacrifice fly by Smith.

Jamal Wilson (1-0) picked up the win. In 2.1 innings of relief work he allowed only two hits. Andre Rodriguez got the save. Rodriguez and Jose Cruz each recorded two hits.

JSU returns to action Thursday, March 13 when the Tigers take on LeMoyne-Owen College in non-conference action. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 4 p.m.
