MONROE, La. — The Jackson State baseball team picked up another non-conference win Tuesday, March 11, 2014, when the Tigers defeated the Louisiana Monroe Warhawks 9-6 at Warhawk Field. With the win JSU improves to a 10-6 overall record and a 3-2 mark in road games.

The Tigers pounded out 14 hits to score their nine runs. Jose Cruz led the Tigers, going 4-5 at the plate with two runs and three RBIs. Desmond Russell finished with two hits, a run and two RBIs. Bryce Taylor, Tilur Smith and Nick Marigny each had two hits. Taylor recorded a home run in the game.

Chris Wingard (2-1) pitched 5.2 effective innings to pick up the win. He struck out four batters and allowed four runs on four hits. Alexander Juday got the save. In 3.1 innings of work, he struck out three batters and gave up two runs on three hits.

ULM scored the first three runs of the game, scoring them all in the third inning. JSU used a four-run fourth inning to take over the lead 4-3. Taylor homered over the left field wall to score JSU’s first run. Dylan Parker scored on a Marigny double. Marigny and Smith then scored on a Cruz double.

JSU increased its lead to 6-3 in the sixth when Marigny scored on a balk and Cruz scored on a throwing error. The Warhawks trimmed the JSU lead to 6-5 by scoring a run in the sixth and seventh innings. The Tigers put the game out of reach with two runs in the eighth when Russell hit a two-run homer over the left center field wall and an insurance run in the ninth.

JSU and ULM return to action Wednesday, March 12, when the series shifts to JSU’s Braddy Field. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
