JACKSON, Miss. — The Jackson State baseball team won a 2-1 defensive battle with the Alabama A&M Bulldogs Saturday, March 8, 2014, at Braddy Field. Desmond Russell (4-2) pitched all 11 innings to pick up the decision for the Tigers. He recorded 12 strikeouts and allowed eight hits and only one run.
With the win JSU improves to a 9-6 overall record and a 2-1 SWAC mark. AAMU falls to 6-12, 3-3. The two teams combined for 15 hits.
Gary Thomas and Fred Hampton led JSU offensively, recording two hits each. Hampton and Tillery each scored a run for the Tigers. Each team scored a run in the fourth inning. Hampton reached base on a single to right field and scored on a Stephen Curtis RBI single to left center field. Tillery doubled down the left field line to get on base and scored on a Hampton single.
Jackson State returns to action Tuesday, March 11, when the Tigers travel to Monroe, La., to face Louisiana Monroe in the first game of non-conference action. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start time.
