Baseball beats Texas Southern 5-3 on SWAC Tournament Opening Day

FT. WORTH, Texas – The Jackson State baseball team picked up a 5-3 victory over the Texas Southern Tigers Wednesday evening on the first day of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at LaGrave Field. JSU and TSXO were able to get the game in before thunderstorms hit the area.

Alexander Juday picked up the win for the JSU Tigers. He gave up one run and scattered four hits over eight innings. He struck out four batters.

JSU scored its five runs on nine hits and had four RBI. Texas Southern had five hits and three RBI. Aneko Knowles went 3-4 at the plate for the Tigers, with a run scored. Ethan Bright went 2-3 with two RBI.

Texas Southern scored the first run of the game in the first inning. JSU trailed 1-0 until the Tigers put two runs on the scoreboard in the third inning when Nick Marigny doubled to get on base and scored on a throwing error. JSU took the lead when Gary Thomas scored on a Stephen Curtis single to right field to make the score 2-1.

JSU extended its lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning. An Ethan Bright single to right field scored Stephen Curtis and Aneko Knowles. Bryce Taylor scored JSU’s final run of the game when he stole home. Texas Southern rallied in the ninth inning, scoring two runs to make the final score 5-3.

JSU returns to action Thursday, May 16 when the Tigers take on in-state rival Alcorn State. First pitch is set for 3 pm. The ASU Braves beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 11-8 in the early game on opening day. During the regular season JSU held the series advantage, as the Tigers won five of the six games played.
