JACKSON – The Jackson State football team held its first morning practice of fall camp on Tuesday. The practice was originally set for 3 pm, but was moved to the morning to avoid expected heat index temperatures of more than 100 degrees.

The Jackson State football team hit the field for its third of practice Monday. In addition to continuing with the conditioning the Tigers also began laying its foundation – installing concepts on both sides of the ball. Today was the first day for the Tigers in shoulder pads.

In 7-on-7 drills LaMontiez Ivy (R-FR, QB) and Daniel Williams (FR, WR) connected for the one of the more exciting plays of the day. Williams hauled in an underthrown pass that hit the defender on the shoulder and bounced into the air, before the East St. Louis, Ill. native snagged the ball and ran for a touchdown.

Ivy, Clayton Moore and Evan Ingram all had good moments during the passing drills, with each hitting multiple receivers. But, overall the defensive backs had a better day than yesterday during the passing drills.

“I really enjoyed today, I thought the guys got better,” said head coach Rick Comegy. “We were able to let the offensive and defensive lines mix it up a little bit in 1-on-1 drills.”

Comegy feels good about the pace of things for the team.

“We are really moving along with the basic fundamentals of the game. I want to take my time in making sure we have a good concept during camp.”

Players that stood out include – Javancy Jones (DL), Ryan Griffin (DB), John McNabb (LB), Joe Perry (DB), LaCory Tucker (WR) and Daniel Williams (WR).

JSU will have its first two-a-day practice on Wednesday. The morning session is scheduled for 8 am – 10:30 am and the afternoon session for 3 pm – 5:30 pm. The Tigers will don full pads for the first time in fall practice on Wednesday.
