Baseball: Tigers beat PVAM 8-4, advance to SWAC Championship Game

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Jackson State baseball team advanced to its second straight Southwestern Athletic Conference title game by beating the Prairie View A&M Panthers 8-4 Friday evening during the 2014 SWAC Baseball Tournament at MLB UYA Wesley Barrow Stadium.

The Tigers rallied in the fourth inning and held off the Panthers en route to picking up their 30th win of the season. The Tigers have recorded three straight 30-plus win seasons and a total of seven under head coach Omar Johnson.

A Melvin Rodriguez RBI single to center field scored Gary Thomas to give JSU a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With the Tigers trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fourth, JSU scored five runs to reclaim the lead. With two outs and the bases loaded in the inning, Gary Thomas walked to score Jose Cruz. Desmond Russell singled up the middle to send Bryce Taylor and Stephen Curtis home. Thomas then scored on a throwing error by the catcher and Russell scored on Tilur Smith single to left field.

Aneko Knowles scored the final run of the game for JSU when he scored on a balk.

Vincent Anthonia (3-0) pitched 5.2 innings in relief to pick up the win. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out four batters. Russell continued his hot streak at the plate as she went 2-4 with a run and three RBIs.

Jackson State (30-23) and Alabama State will meet Sunday at 2 p.m. in the SWAC Baseball championship game. The Tigers are 3-0 during the SWAC Tournament.
