NEW ORLEANS, La. - Jackson State scored three runs in the sixth inning en route to a 7-1 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in game three of the 2014 SWAC Baseball Tournament on Wednesday at MLB UYA at Wesley Barrow Stadium.
With the win JSU improves to a 28-23 overall record. Desmond Russell (8-4) orchestrated a complete game with eight strikeouts. He gave up five hits and one run (unearned). He also homered in the sixth to spark a three-run frame to give JSU (28-23) a 4-0 lead.
The Tigers added one run in the seventh and two in the eighth. Russell, Bryce Taylor and Charles Tillery each had a pair of RBIs while Melvin Rodriguez and Jose Cruz each scored two runs. Tilur Smith, the SWAC Newcomer of the Year, recorded two hits and a run for the Tigers.
For UAPB, Mikey Ramirez (6-5) was saddled the loss. He gave up five earned runs and eight hits. Andre Davis handed the Golden Lions their only run scoring Vladimir Gomez on a fielder's choice.
The Tigers finished with 11 hits while UAPB had five. JSU returns to action Thursday, May 15, 2014 when the Tigers face the Alabama A&M Bulldogs (No. 2 seed) at 3:00 p.m. The Bulldogs posted a 4-2 record against the Tigers during the regular season.
