JACKSON, Miss. - The NCAA National Office has released its public recognition announcement as part of the 2014 Division I Academic Performance Program (APP), and Jackson State University continues to be a national leader in Academic Performance Rate scores.

JSU’s APR scores continue to trend upward. For the fourth year in a row, a pair of Jackson State programs (men’s tennis and women’s cross country) have been recognized for recording perfect APR scores. The highest APR score that can be earned during a four-year cohort is 1,000.

Since 2009, one or more JSU teams have received the APR Public Recognition Award. Below is a list of JSU teams publicly recognized by the NCAA:

·        (2009-10) Women’s Golf and Women’s Tennis

·        (2010-11) Women’s Cross Country, Women’s Golf, and Women’s Tennis

·        (2011-12) Women’s Tennis

“We are very proud of our student-athletes,” said Director of Athletics Vivian L. Fuller. “With guidance and support from JSU President Carolyn W. Meyers and the hard work of our academic support staff, coaches, administrators and student-athletes, JSU Athletics has become a model NCAA program in academics.”

Background on APP Public Recognition Announcement

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
