JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State women’s track team rise in SWAC rankings while competing at the Gateway Invite hosted by Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Ill. on Saturday, April 19.
The Lady Tigers had a great day in the field events. Sharonda Bryant, a sophomore, threw 12.84m (42’1.50”) placing her seventh on the SWAC Outdoor shot put list. Ky’Bria Spell, freshman, followed Byrant with a PR throw of 11.92m (39’1.25”) which moved her up to 13th in SWAC rankings. They finished the meet off by throwing lifetime PRs in discus; Bryant threw 45.21m (148’04”) placing her second in SWAC ranking and Spell pulled out a 41.41m (135’10) throw which moved her to fifth place. Spell also threw a PR of 38.51m (126’04”) in the hammer and Hannah Porter, junior, threw a lifetime best of 42.43m in the hammer ranking her tenth in the SWAC.
JSU also did well in the running events. Krissle Nicome, junior, ran a season best of 4:58.71 in the 1500m run ranking her sixth in the conference. Majaica Brooks, freshman, ran a season best of 15.19 in the 100m hurdles ranking her 13th in the SWAC and 1:06.56 in 400m hurdles ranking her ninth. Briana Brown, junior, ran a 15.17 in the 100m hurdles ranking her 12th in the SWAC and A’Kendra Lewis, sophomore, ran another season best of 58.28 in the 400m.
The Lady Tigers next competition will be Friday, April 25-Sunday, April 27 when they travel to New Orleans, La. to compete in the SWAC Outdoor Championship.
