JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team and the Alabama State Hornets squared off in a matchup of the two top teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division Saturday evening at Braddy Field and the Hornets took sole possession of the top spot in league standings.

ASU took the first two games of the weekend three-game series. The Hornets won game won 8-6 and game two 6-1. With the losses JSU falls to a 17-8, 5-3 record and ASU improves to 20-8, 11-1.

Game 1:

The Tigers trailed 4-1 through six innings. ASU added two runs in the seventh to take a 6-1 advantage. The Tigers rallied, putting up five runs at the bottom of the seventh. Melvin Rodriguez, Charles Tillery, Nick Marigny, Jose Cruz and Fred Hampton all scored. ASU added two insurance runs on the eight to make the final score 8-6.

For the game, JSU finished with eight hits, six runs and five RBI. Tilur Smith and Rodriguez each finished with a team high two hits. Richard Gonzalez led ASU with three. Andre Rodriguez pitched 1.2 innings in relief. He suffered the loss, despite allowing only one hit.

Game 2:

Jackson State scored its only run in the first inning when Stephen Curtis doubled to center field to get on base and scored on a throwing error. ASU responded with a two run second inning and a four run third inning.

JSU finished the game with 10 hits and one run. ASU had nine hits, six runs and six RBI. Taylor, Smith and Marigny each recorded two hits.

The two teams return to action Sunday at 1 pm to play the third game of the series at Braddy Field.
