JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team hosts the Alabama State Hornets Saturday (Mar. 22) and Sunday (Mar. 23) in a SWAC weekend series at Braddy Field. First pitch for both days is set for 1 pm.
The Tigers (17-6, 5-1 SWAC) and the Hornets (18-8, 9-1 SWAC) were the top two vote getters in the preseason predicted order of finish. ASU was chosen to represent the East in the SWAC title game and JSU was selected as the runner-up. The two teams also dominated preseason All-SWAC voting. JSU’s Charles Tillery was selected as the SWAC Preseason Player of the Year, while Alabama State’s are TJ Renda and Emmanuel Marrero were selected as the SWAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year and Preseason Defensive Player of the Year respectively. In total, JSU has seven preseason All-SWAC selections and ASU has six.
Both teams are among the top teams in most SWAC statistical categories. Alabama State leads the league in batting average (.303) and JSU leads the SWAC in ERA (3.28). The two teams are one and two in the following SWAC categories: runs scored (ASU 177, JSU 142), RBI (ASU 156, JSU 118), doubles (JSU 53, ASU 45), total plate appearances (ASU 953, JSU 907), at bats (ASU 799, JSU 711), walks (JSU 104, ASU 88), hit by pitch (JSU 42, ASU 39), sac flies (ASU 14, JSU 12) and stolen bases (JSU 36, ASU 33).
Jackson State and Alabama State are the only teams in the SWAC win winning records. ASU has a .750 winning percentage and JSU has a .727 winning percentage.
