Lady Tigers Sweep Southern, 8-4 and 4-3

JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State University softball team swept Southern University, 8-4 and 4-3 on Tuesday evening at the JSU Softball Complex.

With the victories, JSU improves to 7-22 on the season, before entering conference play. 

The Lady Tigers got their bats going in the first game, tallying ten hits throughout the contest. JSU rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the first inning and two in the fourth before gifting SU two runs in the fifth inning, making it a 6-2 contest. 

The Lady Jaguars (0-20) tried making a comeback, scoring two more runs in the top of the sixth inning, but it wasn't enough as the Lady Tigers added two runs of their own in the bottom half of the sixth, capping an 8-4 ballgame.

In the second game of the evening, Jackson State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, before Southern drove in a run in the top of the third. The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, grabbing a 4-1 cushion over SU. 

The Lady Jags rallied to score two more runs in the top of the fifth, but it wasn't enough as Jackson State, capped a 4-3 ballgame.

Junior hurler Kelsey Townsend picked up her fourth victory on the season in game one, while freshman hurler Sybil Lozano captured her first collegiate victory of her young career.

Senior Lauren Aikens paced the Lady Tigers at the plate in the first game, going 3-for-3, including two RBI and a run.

Junior Vicki Johnson went 3-for-2 at the plate in the second contest to lead Jackson State.

The Lady Tigers will travel to Longview,Texas to participate in the 2014 Southwestern Athletic Conference Roundup. JSU will face Texas Southern University on Friday, March 21 at 6:30 p.m.
