STARKVILLE, Miss.- The Jackson State University Men’s tennis team was swept (0-7) by Mississippi State University in its season-opener Saturday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Center.

Mississippi State (0-1) got off to a hot start against the Tigers (0-1), taking the doubles point. Freshman Rishab Argawal and veteran Zach White struck first on court three, with a 6-0 victory over senior Jose Luque and sophomore Hernan Geria.  The freshman duo Ryan Swanier and Kashyap Ashok lost at the top spot and junior Carlos Martinez and sophomore Camilo Patino finished last in a well-played match.

In singles play, top player Kashyap played well against No. 63 Lakat.  Many games went to sudden death, but Lakat came out victorious.  Jose Luque had a great match at no. 4 position, Carlos Martinez also had a strong showing with No.15 Schmidt at the third position and Camilo Patino had the match of the day with his opponent unfortunately mounting a second-set comeback to take his match 6-1, 6-5(2).

“I was really proud of the way the guys came out today,” coach Scott Pennington said. “We’re suppose to lose these matches, but we didn’t let down. Everyone stayed focused and tried to take care of business, which was good to see, especially from the new guys.”
