The Jackson State University volleyball team faced adversity throughout the first day of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament, but prevailed when it counted the most. JSU fell to the University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff in its first game of the day, before defeating Southern and UAPB in a second match to advance to the semifinal round of the tournament.
Game 1: JSU 1 vs. UAPB 3
The Lady Tigers weren’t able to find their touch, falling 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-27) to Ark. Pine-Bluff during their first matchup on the day. UAPB took the first two sets in rare fashion, defeating JSU 23-25 and 21-25.
Jackson State came out of the half giving the Golden Lions a scare and overwhelming them 25-18. UAPB trailed in the fourth and final set but made a run to overpower the Lady Tigers, 25-27.
Sophomore middle blocker Mikayla Rolle paced JSU’s offense recording 14 kills and added 3 blocks. Sophomore setter Jenna Siddiqui tallied 39 assists and recorded 16 digs for the Lady Tigers.
Game 2: JSU 3 vs. Southern 0
Jackson State began the match taking the first two sets by scores of 26-24 and 25-22. The Lady Jaguars had no answer for the powerful force of sophomore outside hitter Jasmine Knight and senior middle blocker Paige Williams. Knight registered eleven kills while Williams added 13 to spearhead the Lady Tigers pass a stingy SU’s defense.
Siddiqui led JSU in assists with 33 and digs with eleven.
Simone Beasley paced SU with nine kills; while Chanda Journet added 18 assists and Diamond Williams tallied 17 digs.
Game 3: JSU 3 vs. UAPB 2
The Lady Tigers knocked off Ark. Pine-Bluff in the final matchup of the day 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 9-25, 17-25, 15-7).
Jackson State went up two sets, before dropping consecutive sets after the break. Led by Williams (eleven kills) and Rolle (10 kills) offensively, JSU defeated UAPB 15-7 in its final set to eliminate the Golden Lions from the SWAC tournament.
Siddiqui added 37 assists and tallied 10 digs; while senior Briana Hopkins tallied eleven digs for the Lady Tigers.
UAPB was led by Rachel Hornbuckle with eleven kills; while Jordan Foyer added 32 assists, offensively. Courtney Brand recorded 20 digs to pace the Golden Lions defensively.
Jackson State will face Alabama State University Sunday, Nov. 24 at T.B. Ellis Gymnasium. First set begins at 9 a.m. Note: The Lady Tigers have to defeat the Lady Hornets twice to make it to the Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship game against the winner of the Alabama A&M University/Texas Southern matchup tomorrow. The Championship game will be aired on ESPNU at 3 p.m.
