Jackson State Softball Adds Three during Early Signing Period

Head coach Rick Fremin and the Jackson State University softball team signed Merina Young, Sarah Austin, and Ashley Neal, during its early signing period Thursday afternoon.

“We are excited about this group," stated Fremin. "They are Division I softball student-athletes and we are excited about them wearing the Blue & White."

Merina Young, a 6’0” right-handed pitcher from Kimberly, Wisconsin.  She will be a transfer from Faulkner State Community College in Bay Minette, Alabama. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa with a 3.6 GPA.  Young attended Kimberly High School where she made first team all conference, three consecutive years.  She played on Team Wisconsin and was a top performer for the Midwest Showcase for two years in a row. Merina will prepare at JSU for a career in Occupational Therapy.

Sarah Austin, a 5’3” Middle Infielder/Outfielder and comes to JSU from Caledonia, Michigan where she’s been a varsity starter since her freshman year, competing in Michigan’s toughest Division 1 softball region. Over her first 3 years of high school softball Sarah has been an all-conference, all district and all area selection on multiple occasions. From her freshman, sophomore and junior years Sarah has a combine On Base Percent of .488, Batting Average of .382 (including 25 Doubles, 4 Triples, 6 Home Runs) with 75 RBI, 91 Runs Scored, 43 stolen bases and a fielding percent of .935 in 87 games played.

Beyond high school, Sarah has been playing select travel softball since age 10, most recently she played for The Queens of Diamonds – 18U ASA Gold team, based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan.  At JSU Sarah plans to major in Social Sciences as she prepares for a career in addictions counseling.

Ashley Neal, a 5’3” Catcher/Shortstop from Flowery Branch, Georgia.  She attends West Hall High School in Oakwood, Georgia.  Her high school stats Ashley is a member of the Lady Falcons travel ball organization.

Neal’s stats from the 2012 season: 68 at bats, 18 walks, 6 HBP, 6 K’s, 33 hits, 7 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, 20 RBI’s, 34 runs, 19 – 19 Stolen bases, .485 batting avg., .706 slg %, .620 OB %. Her 2012 Spring Travel ball season: 85 at bats, 9 walks, 3 HBP, 6 K’s, 16 singles 10 doubles, 6 triple, 4HR, .507 batting avg.  Her accomplishments include Varsity starter since my freshman year, 2012 All Region 7-AAA First Team, 2012 MVP, broke my schools batting average record, 2011 All Region 8-AAA First Team, 2011MVP, 2010 All Region 8-AAA Honorable mention, 2009 My travel team,(Southern Explosion) won the Dizzy Dean World Series, 2009 All Tournament Team.
