Menís Basketball falls 65-61 to Arkansas State

JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State men’s basketball lost its home opener to Arkansas State Monday night at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center. Despite a double digit scoring and rebounding effort from Brandon “BJ” West the Tigers fell 65-61 to the Red Wolves.

With the loss JSU falls to a 0-2 record and Arkansas State improves to 1-0.

West led the Tigers with 14 points and 11 rebounds, recording his first double-double as a JSU Tiger. He went 6-12 from the floor and was a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line. Three other Tigers scored in double figures. Julysses Nobles finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. He connected on 6-12 shots from the field. Jeff Stubbs added 12 points on 5-10 shooting. He also dished out a team high three assists and had three steals. Javeres Brent scored 11 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

Cameron Golden led Arkansas State with 16 points on 5-11 shooting from the field.

The game was tied 33-33 going into halftime. In the first half JSU shot 44.1% from the field (15-34) and A-State connected at a 44.8% rate (13-29) from the floor.

In the second half JSU was outscored 32-28. With 13:38 left in the second half the Tigers held a 50-39 advantage, but went scoreless for over seven minutes. The Red Wolves tied the game at the 2:45 mark (56-56) and took the lead on Melvin Johnson three-pointer (59-56).

For the game JSU out-rebounded A-State 46-32. The Red Wolves scored 31 bench points and held the Tigers bench to 11 points.

Jackson State returns to action Thursday, Nov. 14 when the Tigers travel to USAF Academy, Co. to face the Air Force Falcons in non-conference action at Clune Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 pm.
