HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Jackson State men’s basketball team fell 67-51 to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in its season opener Friday night at Reed Green Coliseum. The game was JSU head coach Wayne Brent’s first a collegiate head coach.

The Tigers led 31-28 at halftime, but was outscored 39-20 in the second half. Three Tigers scored in double figures for JSU. Javeres Brent came off the bench to lead the Tigers with 11 points while Julysses Nobles and Jeff Stubbs each added 10 points. Brent went 3-11 from the field (all from three-point range). He also went 2-3 from the free throw line and pulled down three rebounds. Nobles went 4-9 from the floor and 2-7 from the line. He also grabbed seven rebounds. Stubbs was a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line and was 1-7 from the floor. He also pulled down seven rebounds.

Three Eagles scored in double figures. Daveon Boardingham finished with 15 points. Aaron Brown followed with 12 and Jerrold Brooks scored 11. Southern Miss held the rebounding edge (42-38).

JSU led 31-28 at halftime. In the first half JSU shot 32.3% (10-31) from the field and USM connected at a 31.8% rate (7-22). In the second half JSU at a 27.3% rate (6-22) and USM made 45% of its field goal attempts (9-20).

JSU returns to action Monday, Nov. 11 when the Tigers host Arkansas State at the Lee E. Williams Athletics and Assembly Center at 7:30 pm. JSU will offer a $5 ticket discount to all Military Veterans for the game. For more ticket information contact the JSU Athletics Ticket Office at 601-979-2420.
