Soccer to Take on Southern University

JACKSON- The Jackson State University soccer team will travel to Baton Rouge, LA to face Southern University on Friday, Oct. 17.

The JSU Lady Tiger (3-9-1) second in the SWAC Eastern Division will face the SU Lady Jaguars (4-7-1) who are leading the SWAC Western Division.

The Lady Jaguars are lead by sophomore forward Jami Blackston who scored three of the 13 goals for Southern this season. She also has eight points and 18 shots. Other stand outs for the Lady Jaguars are Kasey Gamble, Nancy Salas, and Lyen Martinez.

The Lady Tigers are lead by freshman defender Elexis Rice. Rice scored four of the 14 goals this season and has 10 points and 19 shots, as well as grabbing SWAC Defensive Player of the Week honors twice (in consecutive weeks). Other standouts for the Lady Tigers are Shatiaunna Banks and Patricia Cartwright.  Banks has scored two goals this season. Cartwright, who also has two goals, was named the SWAC Offensive Player of the Week in week six.  

“We are looking forward to going down there and playing them because they are the top of the West,” said head Coach Dean Joseph. “It will give us a good measure in terms of where we are.”
