The Jackson State baseball team will square off against the Prairie View A&M Panthers Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth, Texas for the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship.
With a win the Tigers (33-20, 19-5) will capture their 15th conference title and first since 2000. Head Coach Omar Johnson has recorded six 30-plus win seasons during his seven year tenure as head coach of the Tigers. During the season JSU faced three SWAC Western Division opponents – Texas Southern, Southern and Grambling State. The Tigers finished with a 4-3 record against the SWAC West, including conference tournament games. JSU has gone undefeated in the tournament – winning four straight.
PVAM (27-26, 12-12) beat Alabama State two straight games to get into the title game. The Panthers look to capture their fourth conference championship, as well as trying to make a repeat. The Panthers won the 2012 SWAC crown. After losing the first game of the conference tournament, 16-0 to Alabama State, the Panthers rattled off four straight wins to get into the championship game. PVAM has a 6-3 record, including the tournament, against teams from the SWAC Eastern Division.
Sunday’s match-up will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams. Ticket prices for the SWAC championship game are $10 (general admission) and $5 (students). Tickets can be purchased on game day at LaGrave Field.
The game will broadcast live on ESPN3 and aired tape-delayed on ESPNU Monday, May 20 at 9 pm.
