FT. WORTH, Texas – The Jackson State baseball team advanced to the championship game of the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament by beating and eliminating the Texas southern Tigers Friday night at LeGrave Field. JSU beat TXSO 7-4 en route to picking up its 33rd win of the season.
Aneko Knowles (5-2) picked up the win. He pitched 6.1 innings for the Tigers and allowed three runs on three hits. Desmond Russell picked up his second save of the season. In 2.2 innings of relief work he allowed one run on three hits while striking out three batters.
The Tigers recorded only four hits, but it was enough for the win. Charles Tillery went 2-3 at the plate with a run and two RBI. Bryce Taylor recorded a run and a hit and Fred Hampton finished with a hit.
Texas Southern got on the scoreboard first, putting up three runs in the third inning. Bryce Taylor got hit by a pitch to get on base and scored on a Charles Tillery sacrifice fly to cut TXSO’s lead to 3-1. JSU took the lead for good, scoring three in the sixth inning. Gabriel Babineaux, Ethan Bright and Tillery all scored to give JSU a 4-3 advantage.
JSU added three insurance runs in the eighth inning when Aneko Knowles, Bright and Jose Cruz all scored. Texas Southern rallied in the eighth but could only muster one run.
Jackson state (33-20) will return to action Sunday at 2 p.m. and will play the winner of tonight’s Alabama State vs. Prairie View A&M game for the SWAC title. The championship game will be shown on ESPNU Monday, May 20 at 9 p.m.
