SWAC SB Tournament Day 1: Lady Tigers fall to GSU in extra innings

DECATUR, Ala. – The Jackson State softball team opened the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament with a 5-4 loss to Grambling State at Wilson Morgan Park. With the loss JSU falls to a 26-28 record and GSU improves to 10-34. The JSU Lady Tigers came into to the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Division and GSU is the No. 4 seed on the Western side of the league.

Breea Jamerson suffered the loss for JSU. In 5.2 innings of work she allowed a run on seven hits and had three strikeouts. Jasmine Warren was the starting pitcher for JSU. In 3.1 innings she gave up four runs on six hits.

JSU scored its four runs on seven hits. Ariel Siegel led JSU with two hits, a run and a RBI. GSU opened the by scoring four runs over the first two innings. JSU scored four runs in the fifth inning to tie the game.

GSU won the game in the ninth, scoring a run at the inning when Brianna Maiden drove home the winning run.

The opening day of the SWAC Tournament was filled with upsets as Prairie View A&M beat defending champions Mississippi Valley State. JSU and MVSU, the two teams that met in last season’s championship game, are both in the elimination bracket.

JSU returns to action Thursday to take on Arkansas Pine Bluff at 1 p.m.
