Baseball takes first two games for Alcorn State

JACKSON – The Jackson State baseball team moved another step closer to wrapping up the top spot in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division Friday by taking the first two games of a three-game series against the Alcorn State Braves. JSU won the first game 5-2 and rallied from a four run deficit to claim a 6-5 victory in the night cap.

Alexander Juday (2-4) pitched a complete game to pick up the win in game one. In nine innings of work he allowed seven hits and struck out four batters. Mike Peters (3-7) suffered the loss. In eight innings of work he gave up five runs on eight hits, while striking out three batters.

Malcolm Tate, Charles Tillery and Jose Cruz each recorded two hits for the Tigers. Ashton Lewis led Alcorn State with two hits.

After falling behind by a run in the fourth inning, the Tigers used a power surge in the fifth to score four runs. JSU added an insurance run in the seventh.

In the nightcap, JSU trailed Alcorn 5-1 going into the seventh inning. At the bottom of the seventh JSU cut the lead to 5-3. Ethan Bright drove in the game-tying and game-winning runs in the ninth inning.

Aneko Knowles and Bright each recorded three hits for JSU. Tate went 4-5 at the plate with three runs and a RBI for the Tigers.

Jackson State and Alcorn State will play the final game of the series Saturday at 12 p.m. at Braddy Field.
