NEW ORLEANS – The Jackson State men’s and women’s tennis teams both won on the first day of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament on Friday.
The No. 3 seeded Lady Tigers beat the No. 5 seeded Alabama A&M 4-1. In doubles action Karen Martinez and Angela Condorelli defeated Quanda Jarrett and Jessica Taylor 8-1 at the No. 2 position. Rebekah Adewumi and Laura Rojas beat Denise Cherry and Kara Kennemore 8-5.
In singles action Kesica Jayalapan defeated Jessica Taylor 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Condorelli beat Kennemore 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5 and Rojas defeated Jarrett 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6.
In men’s action, the No. 3 seeded Tigers beat the No. 5 seeded Arkansas Pine Bluff Golden Lions 4-0. Camilo Patino and Carlos Martinez beat Nicolas Plaza and David Gomez 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. Hernan Geria and Marko Milosaveljevic won by default at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Patino beat Gomez 6-0, 6-0, and Geria and Milosaveljevic won by default.
The Tigers and Lady Tigers return to action Saturday for day two of the SWAC tournament.
