LONGVIEW, Tex. – The Jackson State softball team closed out the Southwestern Athletic Conference roundup with two straight wins and an undefeated conference record. The Lady Tigers defeated Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M on the final day of the tournament. The Jackson State vs. Arkansas Pine Bluff game that was postponed Saturday will resume on Monday, April 15 on the Louisiana Monroe campus at 4:00 p.m.
The Lady Tigers beat Texas Southern 7-5 in the opening game of the day. Breea Jamerson pitched seven innings to pick up the win for JSU. She gave up five runs on 10 hits. Canessa Swanson went 3-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI. Jasmine Warren finished the game with two hits, two runs and a RBI.
JSU trailed Texas Southern 2-0 after the first two innings. JSU tied the game in the third with a two run inning. At the bottom of the third TSU reclaimed the lead with a run (3-2). JSU took control in the fourth with a three run outburst for a 5-3 lead.
Texas Southern pulled to within one run in the sixth, but JSU added an insurance run in the seventh to make the final score 7-5.
JSU won the second game against Prairie View A&M 9-1 in five innings. Jamerson (12-14) pitched all five innings, giving up one run on five hits. Offensively, Lauren Aikens went 2-2 at the plate with three runs and two RBI. She also hit her second home run of the tournament. Sabeana Romero was 1-2 with a run and two RBI. She also hit a home run.
PVAM scored its only run in the first inning. JSU tied the game with the Aikens homer. The Lady Tigers controlled the rest of the game scoring three runs in the fourth and five in the fifth.
JSU returns to action Tuesday, March 26 to host the University of Memphis at the JSU Softball Complex in a non-conference double header. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
