MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Jackson State baseball team lost its first conference series, falling 14-4 to the Alabama State Hornets in the final of a three-game series at Wheeler-Watkins field Sunday afternoon. With the loss JSU falls to a 10-10 overall record and a 7-2 SWAC record. Alabama State improves to 14-7, 6-3).
ASU claimed the series by winning the opener and Sunday's game. The Tigers won the second game 12-1 via the 10-run rule on Saturday.
Aneko Knowels (1-1) suffered the loss, pitching 5.2 innings while giving up eight runs on six hits. Joel Alvira (2-0) pitched 5.2 innings to pick up the win. He allowed one run on four hits.
For the game JSU finished with four runs on seven hits, while ASU had 14 runs on nine hits. Gabriel Babineaux had two hits, a run and a RBI for JSU. Jose Cruz finished with two hits, a run and two RBI.
JSU scored its runs in the second and seventh innings. Gary Thomas scored on a Cruz single in the second and Ethan Bright, Babineaux and Cruz each scored in the seventh.
JSU returns to action Wednesday, March 20 when the Tigers host SE Louisiana at Braddy Field on the JSU campus. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
