JACKSON, Miss. - The Jackson State women's tennis team (6-6) split a pair of matches Friday at the JSU Tennis Complex. The Lady Tigers opened the day with a win over SEMO and ended it with a loss to West Alabama.
In the opening match, the Lady Tigers defeated Southeast Missouri 4-3. JSU took two of the three doubles matches. Harshini Reedy and Kesica Jayapalan fell 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. Rebekah Adewumi and Laura Rojas earned an 8-5 victory at No. 2 over Robinson and Schaper. Karen Martinez and Angela Condorelli wrapped up doubles action with an 8-4 victory over Courtnell and Martin.
The Lady Tigers won three of the six singles matches. Jayapalan recorded the first singles victory of the day, beating Martin (6-1, ret.) at No. 5. Condorelli recorded the second win in singles action, beating Schaper 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6. SEMO picked up a win at No. 4 singles when Cortnell defeated Rojas 6-1, 6-1. Adewumi fell 6-1, 6-2 to Novikova at No. 3. JSU's Martinez lost 7-5, 6-4 to Robinson at No. 1.
Reddy improved her individual record to 7-4 as she closed out the match with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Nyenwe at No. 2. With the win JSU improved to a 6-5 record.
In the second match of the day, JSU fell 5-2 to West Alabama. The two first matches in doubles action got under slipped away from the Lady Tigers. Reddy and Jayapalan lost 8-4 at the No. 1 position and Adewumi and Rojas fell 8-3 at No. 2. Martinez and Condorelli beat Popova and Gerding 8-2.
As the Lady Tigers started singles play the weather turned cold and windy and they were unable to make up ground against UWA. Martinez picked up a win for JSU at the No. 1 position beating Jeske 6-2, 6-2. Jayapalan beat Gerding 6-2, 6-2 to record the final single win for JSU.
