BIRMINGHAM - Another dominating performance by Alabama State hightlighted the weekend at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex.

he Lady Hornets made it four straight, blowing away the rest of the field. It was also the eighth championship for ASU overall.

ASU piled up 218 points, far ahead of second place Prairie View who finished with 155. Southern was a distant third with 56 points, followed by Arkansas-Pine Bluff with 54 and fifth place Texas Southern who tallied 52.

Mississippi Valley led the remainder of the field in sixth place with 43 points. Jackson State came in seventh with 18 points, Alabama A&M was eighth with 15 and Grambling State 10.


Individually, Ninfa Barnard (left) of UAPB earned Top Female Runner accolades after winning the 800, 3000 meter and Mile runs and finishing with 30 points. 

The Top Female Field Performer award went to Kashmia Weary of Southern who nipped Aisha White of Prairie View by one point. Weary tallied 14 points, finishing second in the Weight Throw and third in the Shot Put. White tied for second in the High Jump and finished third in the Triple Jump for 13 points.

Head Coach Ritchie Bean was again named Indoor Women's Coach of the Year.

60m Hurdles

Myesha Dixon of Prairie View streaked to a first place finish in the 60 meter dash. She left the field in the dust, finishing with a time of 8.60. Tershauna Broadnax of Southern was second with a time of 8.67, while Alicia Wimley of Mississippi Valley was third at 8.72.

60m Dash

Tia Rolle of Alabama State defended her crown in the 60 meter dash ripping the field with a time of 7.45. Her teammate Jasmine Pope captured second place with a time of 7.64 and Shaleetha Jackson of Prairie View was third at 7.66.

1 Mile Run

Ninfa Barnard of Arkansas-Pine Bluff breezed to a first place finish in the Mile run with a time of 5:05.91. Alabama State runners Artrailia Lesane and Paige Rankine crossed the line in the next two spots at 5:07.48 and 5:15.48 respectively.

Pole Vault

Mahogany Cullins of Prairie View cruised to a first place finish in the Pole Vault flying over the bar at 2.91m (9-06.50). Quinta Collier of Alabama State came in second with a vault of 2.71m (8-10.75), followed by teammate Folasyui Richardson who cleared a mark of 2.61m (8-06.75).

400m Dash

Terracia Moody of Prairie View set a record in the 400m Dash, winning the event with a time of 54.36. Reyna Anderson of Southern ran down Kelsi Alexander of Prairie View down the stretch to take second place with a time of 56.44. Alexander was third with a time of 56.64.

800m Run

Ninfa Barnard of Arkansas-Pine Bluff edged a record-setting field in the 800 meter run to capture her third title of the weekend. She broke the record of 2:13.95 set by Alicia Johnson last season with a time of 2:13.23. Barnard was trailed closely by second and third place finishers Jerrica Mahone of Alabama State and Shaquina Phalo of Alabama A&M who finished with times of 2:13.55 and 2:13.57 respectively.

Weight Throw

Ashley Parker of Prairie View and Samone Coaxum of Grambling tied for first in the Weight Throw. Both ladies had throws of 14.38m (47-02.25). Emma Lee Tigner of Alabama A&M picked up third place with a toss of 13.79m (45-03.00).

200m Dash

Tia Rolle of Alabama State sprinted to her second title of the day, winning the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.02. Terracia Moody of Prairie View finished second with a time of 24.51, while Kadijah Gordon of Alabama State was third at 24.92.

Triple Jump

Terralyn Johnson of Texas Southern hopped her way to first place in the Triple Jump 11.82m (38-09.50). Kadijah Gordon of Alabama State also had a jump of 11.82m, but Johnson had all clean attempts. Meet record holder Aisha White of Prairie View finished third at 11.53m (37-10.00).

5000m Run

Paige Rankine of Alabama State made it look easy, cruising to first place with a time of 18:42.12. Fellow Lady Hornet Artrailia Lesane was second at 19:04.36, while Winny Tanui of Mississippi Valley came from behind to claim third place with a time of 19:10.56. 

4x400m Relay

The Prairie View 4x400 Relay team (Sylvonna Thompson, Kelsi Alexander, Ugonna Okpala, Terracia Moody) closed out the championship with a record first place time of 3:46.19. Alabama State finished second with a time of 3:48.53, while Texas Southern was third at 3:49.01.
