JACKSON, MS - The Jackson State Division of Athletics held its first annual "Breakfast of Champions" event to honor its scholar student-athletes who earned at least a 3.0 grade point average through the summer of 2012. A total of 84 Tigers and Lady Tigers were recognized during a breakfast ceremony Thursday morning at the JSU Student Center Ballroom.
The guest speaker for the event was JSU's interim provost Dr. James C. Renick. During his speech, Renick told the crowd of approximately 150 people that he was humbled to be in the company of such greatness.
"You all are winners in competition and in academics," said Renick. "We are all part of writing the continuing history of Jackson State. What do you want your autobiography to be? You have choices. I would say choose wisely, but you already have because you are scholars."
"One of the primary purposes of higher education it to foster the creative and curious minds. Creative and curious people tend to make the best leaders, artists, business people and champions.
JSU president, Dr. Carolyn C. Meyers thanked the scholar athletes for being heroes to those that are coming behind them.
"Thank you for lighting the way for those behind you and showing them what is possible," said Meyers.
