HOUSTON, Tex. - The Jackson State football team could not complete what it called unfinished business from a season ago. In last season's SWAC title game, JSU lost to Arkansas Pine Bluff in double overtime. On Saturday evening, the Tigers fell 34-27, in double overtime to the Southern Jaguars Saturday at Reliant Stadium for the 2013 Southwestern Athletic Conference Championship Game.
With the loss JSU ends the season with an 8-4 overall record and SU finishes with a 9-4 mark.
In the final moments of the second overtime, Tommy Gooden stepped out of bounds on what would have been a game-tying touchdown reception. Neither team could score in the first overtime. JSU took possession first in the initial overtime. The drive stalled when a Clayton Moore pass was intercepted. On Southern's ensuing possession, JSU blocked the Jaguar's 39-yard field goal attempt to stay alive in the game.
In the second OT Southern scored the game winning touchdown when Dray Jospeh connected with Lee Doss on a 16-yard pass.
SU put the first 10 points on the scoreboard. Gregory Pittman connected on a 41-yard field goal at the 8:21 mark in the first quarter and Willie Quinn hauled in a 34 yard touchdown pass from Joseph at 11:18 in the second quarter.
JSU scored its first points of the game when Ryan Deising hit a 32-yard field goal with 6:12 left in the second quarter. At the 1:04 mark in the second, Pittman hit a 44-yard field goal. The Tigers ended the first half on a good note. While using its two-minute offense, Moore connected with DeSean McKenzie for a 25 yard touchdown pass.
The Jags led 13-10 at halftime.
The Jags opened the second half with a Joseph to Quinn 35-yard touchdown pass. The Tigers scored the final two touchdowns of the third. Zach Pendleton hauled in a 28 yard touchdown pass from Moore and on SU's ensuing drive John McNabb forced a SU fumble and Antonio Sutton scooped the ball up and took it 11 yards for a TD with 2:36 remaining the the third. The score by Sutton was JSU's sixth defensive score of the season.
SU scored the final touchdown of regulation when Darrius Coleman scored on a one-yard run.
With one second left in regulation, Ryan Deising missed a 37-yard field goal attempt but SU called a timeout just before the kick. With the second opportunity following the time out, Deising knocked the field goal through, sending the game into overtime.
Moore led the JSU offense as he finished with 262 passing yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 38 yards. Tommy Gooden was the team's leading rusher with 55 yards. Zach Pendleton caught a team high six passes for 97 yards and a touchdowns.
Ryan Griffin led JSU in tackles, finishing with 15 to go along with 2.5 tackles for loss.

-The conference game was played for the first time in Houston, Texas after the game being played at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama for 15 years.
- JSU scored its first points of the game at the 6:12 mark of the 2nd quarter (32 yd R. Deising FG)
- JSU scored its first TD of the game on a 25 yd Moore to McKenzie pass with 10 sec. left in the 2nd qtr. McKenzie recorded his first TD of the season
-During JSU's final drive of the 1st half, the Tigers went into its 2 min offense mode
-Halftime Score - SU 13, JSU 10 - in the first meeting of the season the SU led JSU 7-3 at halftime
-JSU scores a defensive TD when Antonio Sutton scored off a fumble return (11 yds) - John McNabb forced the fumble
-JSU has lost in back-to-back SWAC Championship games (2012, 2013) - both were overtime games
