JACKSON – The Jackson State softball team moved a step closer to clinching the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division title by taking the final two games of a three game series from the Alabama State Lady Hornets on Saturday at the JSU SB Complex

JSU won the first game of Saturday’s double-header 14-6 in five innings and rallied to claim the night cap 16-9. With the wins JSU improves to a 26-27, 13-4 record and Alabama State falls to 11-32, 8-7.

In the opener, JSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Lady Tigers added eight more runs in the second inning to increase the lead to 12-0. In the final game of the series, Tayler Nave hit a grand slam in the sixth to cap an eight run inning for JSU. ASU scored the first runs of the game, putting two on the scoreboard in the second inning. The Lady Hornets added another run at the top of the third to take a 3-0 advantage. However, JSU made its first rally of the game as the Lady Tigers scored seven runs at the bottom of the third. JSU led 7-3.

ASU cut JSU’s lead to two runs and took a 9-7 advantage after scoring four in the fifth.

Despite being tied with Mississippi Valley State for the SWAC Eastern Division crown, the Lady Tigers can still secure the title. MVSU has to play Alabama State in a weekend series. If Alabama State wins a game, JSU will clinch the SWAC East title.
