JACKSON – The Jackson State baseball team lost its first home series of the season Saturday when the Alabama State Hornets took the first two games of the series, 4-2 and 3-2 at Braddy Field. The Hornets snapped JSU’s three game winning streak.
With the losses JSU falls to a 21-18 overall record and a 15-5 SWAC mark. Alabama State improves to 26-17, 15-5. The two teams are tied atop the SWAC Eastern Division standings with identical conference records.
ASU won the opener by two runs. The Hornets put the first run on the scoreboard in the first inning. Neither team scored until ASU scored three runs in the eighth inning. The Tigers rallied in the ninth inning, but fell short. Bryce Taylor scored the first run of the game for JSU when he was sent home by Charles Tillery. Jose Cruz scored on a Stephen Curtis single.
For the game JSU recorded 10 hits and had two RBI and ASU had 11 hits and four RBI. Gary Thomas and Ethan Bright each finished with two hits. Richard Gonzalez led ASU with a three hit, one run performance.
Alexander Juday (1-3) suffered the loss for JSU. TJ Renda (8-0) picked up the win for ASU.
Vincent Anthonia (5-3) suffered the loss in the second game. In nine innings of work he allowed three runs on 11 hits. Joel Alvira (5-0) pitched six innings to get the win for ASU.
Malcolm Tate went 3-4 at the plate for JSU with a run. Gonzales went 2-4 at the plate for ASU.
Alabama State scored all three of its runs in the second inning. JSU scored its first run at the bottom of the second when Tate scored on a Jose Cruz sacrifice fly out. Jackson State scored its final run of the game when Fred Hampton scored on a Nick Marigny RBI single in the seventh.
The two teams will return to action Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at Braddy Field.
