GREENVILLE, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team completed the season sweep of Mississippi Valley State by winning Sunday’s game 8-6 at Legion Field. JSU won the three-game series in Jackson earlier this season and won the first two games of this weekend’s series on Saturday.
With the win JSU improves to a SWAC best 21-16, 15-3 record. The Tigers are the top ranked team in the SWAC Eastern Division and are closely followed by the Alabama State Hornets (22-17, 13-5) who will travel to Jackson, Miss. to take on the Tigers in a SWAC three-game weekend series.
JSU finished with 16 hits and had seven RBI, while allowing eight MVSU hits.
Andre Rodriguez (3-0) pitched 6.1 innings en route to the victory. He gave up only one run on three hits while striking out a game-high seven batters. David Lostra (2-5) suffered the loss.
Malcolm Tate led JSU with four hits, two runs and three RBI. Fred Hampton had three hits and a run. Trey Lacy led Valley with two hits, two runs and three RBI.
JSU scored the first run of the game in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. MVSU took its only lead of the game in the third inning with a five run outburst. JSU quickly reclaimed the lead scoring five runs in the fourth and another two in the fifth inning to take an 8-5 advantage. Valley tried to rally, scoring a run in the eighth, but fell short.
JSU and Alabama State will square off in a battle for the division lead April 20 and 21. Saturday’s double-header starts at 1 p.m. and Sunday’s single game starts at 2 p.m.
