Baseball splits Saturday twin bill with Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Jackson State baseball team split the first two games of a three game series against Alabama State at Wheeler-Watkins field. ASU got a 9-8 win in the opener, but JSU bounced back to win the nightcap 12-1.

In the first game, Alabama State suffered its first conference loss of the season. Kiarious Hall (0-1) suffered the loss for the Tigers. Gary Thomas led JSU offensively, going 3-6 with three RBI. Fred Hall went 2-3 with three runs.

JSU scored three runs in the first inning and another in the third. ASU scored a run in the third and two more in the fourth to make the score 4-3. The Hornets scored another three in the sixth to take a 6-4 advantage.

Vincent Anthonia won the second game, going seven innings. He gave up one run on seven hits. Charles Tillery, Malcolm Tate and Stephen Curtis each recorded three hits for JSU in the win. Curtis hit a home run for JSU.

JSU opened the game with a three run first inning and never looked back. The Tigers tacked on another five runs in the third inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead. JSU added a run in the sixth and another three in the seventh. JSU finished with 12 hits.

The Tigers and the Hornets will play the final game of the weekend series on Sunday in Montgomery at 1 p.m.
