JACKSON, MS - For the second straight season, the Jackson State softball team opened the season with a victory over the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks. Last season JSU won 11-1, but Thursday's opener at the JSU Softball Complex was not decided until the final inning.
Tahlisa Blosser, the designated player, double to left-center field to send Arial Siegel home in the seventh inning. The game was dominated by stout defensive play until Siegel scored the game-winning run.
For the JSU (1-0) finished with eight hits and two errors. SEMO (0-1) recorded three hits.
Breea Jamerson pitched her first complete game of the season. In seven innings of work she gave up three hits, while striking out three of the 24 batters she faced. Taylor Cowan suffered the loss for SEMO. She allowed eight hits and one run, while striking out four batters.
Sabeana Romero went 2-2 at the plate.
Jackson State returns to action Friday to participate in the Belmont Tournament. JSU will take on Belmont Feb. 8 at 4:00 p.m.
